CARS STOCK EXCHANGE

It's called the Stock Exchange and it may be considered a game, but is it? Yes, you use play money to buy fantasy stocks, but those stocks are tied to real vehicles that you believe will either be a sales boom or bust. CSX trading may deliver a real predictive message about how new vehicles will do in the American marketplace. You are becoming an automotive forecaster while attempting to outsmart your peers by trading car stocks for play profits that will earn you prizes for your superior performance. Expect to hear new lingo around the water cooler, something like, "I went long G8 and short Sequoia and made big bucks, CSX bucks."

Edmunds.com's battery of seasoned experts, many with Ph.D.s, attempt to forecast new vehicle sales based on a variety of historical factors. Now you have a chance to compete with our team and your friends by employing the Wall Street trading strategy of "buying low — selling high," and not necessarily in that order, as CSX allows you to "short" car stocks that you believe will fall short of their predicted sales targets six months from their on-sale showroom release dates. You'll have to ask yourself questions like, "Sequoia sold just 23,273 in all 2007. Can the all-new model really sell 18,900 in its first six months based on a full-year 2008 estimate of 42,000?" Or, "The new BMW 1 Series is cheaper than the 3 Series, which sold 142,490 in 2007, so even with fewer model variants, should the 1 Series sell more than 9,000 units in its first six months?" As your CSX Car Stock Guru blogger, I will only give you the facts, leaving it up to you to make your own "investment" decisions.

Forex rates and car price

I was curious why forex rate changes don't show up in car prices that have some component of imports. For most of the C+ higher segment this ranges from 25% to 100% (CBUs). In a simplistic model if a car price has X% import component then a Y% appreciation in INR should lead to about X*Y decrease in the price. Following is a table assuming 15% rupee appreciation (as with INR vs. many currencies recently)

Car Price Import fraction Expected decrease
10L 0.3 4.00% - 45K INR
12L 0.4 6.75% - 81K INR
24L 1.0 15.00% - 3.6L INR

So the variations could be pretty large based on localisation content. Who gets to pocket these "gains" ? Why these don't get passed on to the poor buyers. Have there been precedents where a company has passed on such gains to the end buyer. I understand it would be cumbersome to change a car price everyday as forex rate moves but periodically it could be possibly done.

Toyota FT-HS Hybrid Sports Concept

The Detroit auto show is a huge theater, a Las Vegas-like stage where carmakers do their best to thrill and amaze a world audience. Toyota will step up this year and present its FT-HS Hybrid Sports Concept, a futuristic sports car that would be powered by a 400-horsepower hybrid powertrain. Of course, the Toyota FT-HS Hybrid Sports Concept is just a concept, little more than a container for the overheated dreams of a bunch of designers at Calty Design Research, Toyota's design studio in Newport Beach, California. In fact, what you see here is only a two-dimensional animation, a computer-generated image of the show car that Toyota will roll out

Toyota Corolla vs. Hyundai Elantra Review

vs

Handling

The Hyundai Elantra and the Toyota Corolla have about comparable tires. With their similar turning radii, the Hyundai Elantra and the Toyota Corolla very likely handle about the same into and out of tight spots.

Drivetrain

The Corolla and the Hyundai Elantra have similar-sized engines, with a slight advantage to the Hyundai Elantra. Torque is the force that lets you accelerate quickly, and in this respect, the Elantra is substantially more powerful than the Toyota Corolla.

Utility

Neither the Toyota Corolla nor the Hyundai has a marked advantage as far as seating capacity.

Convenience

You definitely won't have to visit your friendly gas station more often with the Hyundai Elantra than with the Toyota Corolla, as both offer comparable ranges.

Comfort

While the front cabin in the Hyundai Elantra offers a bit more head room than the Toyota, there really isn't much of a difference. While the rear of the Hyundai Elantra provides a bit more head- and leg-room than the Toyota Corolla, there really isn't much of a difference.

Dimensions

The Hyundai Elantra is a tad heavier than the Toyota Corolla. The Toyota's tank is approximately the same size as the Hyundai Elantra's, though the Hyundai Elantra's is a tad larger. The Elantra and the Toyota compete for the same parking spaces.

Cost

The destination charge is a standard charge for transporting the vehicle from its point of origin to the dealer. It costs roughly the same to get the Hyundai Elantra to the dealership as the Toyota Corolla. The Hyundai Elantra consumes a lot of gas compared to the Toyota Corolla. Producing an exact fuel economy evaluation is so tough that some think not even the federal government can do it, but it looks as though the Toyota Corolla is the winner regarding gas mileage. The Hyundai isn't much more expensive than the Toyota Corolla regarding MSRP.

Overview

The basic warranty that comes with the Toyota isn't quite as generous as the Hyundai Elantra's.

Other top-class features create a dynamism that sets the vehicles apart from other SUVs while providing a strong sense of safety and satisfaction.

Toyota suffers from downturn but says it has no plans to quit F1

Toyota has declared itself resolutely committed to continuing in formula one despite what promises to be its first operating loss for 70 years as the depression in the global car industry worsens.

"We have absolutely no plans to withdraw from formula one," a spokeswoman, Yoshie Matsuura, told the Guardian. Matsuura said Toyota had embarked on a major cost-cutting study but could not specify what measures were under consideration. "We know that [F1] is very expensive and that cost-cutting is the key to survival," she said.

Toyota imposes pay freeze on British workforce

Toyota is imposing a pay freeze on its 4,500-strong British workforce and has told managers they will not receive a bonus this year.

Toyota, which prides itself on avoiding compulsory redundancies, said it would hold further talks with employee representatives next month over whether to move to a shorter working week or opt for a temporary halt in production. It is seeking to cut labour costs by around 10%.

Toyota employs almost 3,900 people at its Burnaston plant in Derbyshire and almost 600 at its Deeside facility.

The Toyota announcement underlines the tough times facing the car industry and follows a series of job losses and production cuts. This week has already seen 850 job loses at BMW's Mini plant near Oxford and 560 jobs cuts at components maker GKN in the West Midlands.

Toyota is now the world's biggest carmaker

Toyota has been declared the world's biggest carmaker after a slot of 77 year unbroken position held by GM. Its much stronger global presence has resulted in its win. General Motors had earlier confused the car industry experts and the reason quoted was that it had been important for it to keep the top slot for corporate pride.

However GM shares declined over the past couple of years and at present it has a market capitalization of just under $2 billion. Toyota has a market value of about $117 billion, and like all major carmakers, it is suffering from the doleful state of the market. It has also warned that it will record its first operating loss for the current financial year.

Last year GM remained in the global top slot by a tiny margin. It sold 9.369 million vehicles, while Toyota sold about 9.366 million vehicles.

NEW 2009 HONDA CITY LAUNCHED IN ASIA

We’ve pretty much revealed the 2009 Honda City completely already, but we might as well report on the official launch of the new model in Thailand, for sale in neighbouring countries such as India, Malaysia and China.

The new City features a new nose similar to Honda’s hydrogen-powered city car, while the rest of the design is unlike any other Honda.

Powered by a 120 hp 1.5-litre 4-cylinder engine, it comes with either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed automatic, ditching the previous model’s CVT transmission that had 7 simulated speeds.

The cabin is probably all hard plastics again, but it all looks decent at least. Cabin space has improved over the previous model, and can now better fit tall adults in the back.

Except the 2009 Honda City to hit Dubai and GCC roads in the first few months of 2008, at a starting price of around Dhs 45,000, if not more. Our market will probably get the Thailand-built version.
